| Question about Pets:How do till a conure.? |
DNA testing is the most accurate. Or if you want to do it the cheap way:) if your bird is mature (about 1-2 years depending on diet) than keep your eye out to see if they rub their vent on the perches in the cage or on your hand. If your bird is doing this it is probably male and if he is doing this on your hand or on someone elses you should discourage it by turning your wrist enough to make them lose balance and telling them firmly "be good". If your bird is shredding a lot and collecting debris to make a nest it could be female. If it lays eggs it's female. But of course DNA testing is the best way if you want to know for sure.
With a good diet and proper care including yearly vet visits, conures can easily make it to 20-30 years or more. To prepare for my conure I read Parrots for Dummies and Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot. Also online has a lot of good conure care sites. http://exoticpets.about.com/gi/dynamic/o...
I own a conure that is currently chewing on me and making it very hard to type.
