| Question about Pets:What can I do for the bird smell? |
If you're smelling odor - something isn't clean. It's either the cage, the room, or the bird.
Bird cages should be cleaned daily. It's best to use paper liners that can be easily removed. Don't use corn husk litter - it gets wet, and molds easily.
Maybe it's your room - vacuum thoroughly and wash the walls behind the cage.
If it's not the cage or the room - it's the bird. Birds need baths.
There are many ways to bathe a bird. You can give them a large, shallow bowl of lukewarm water, and they can do it themselves. You can do it by hand in your sink, with a spayer, using lukewarm water and a gentle spray.
Or, you can use a shower. If you have a small cage, you can wash the bird and the cage at the same time. Remove everything from the cage, except one perch. Take the cage, with the bird into the bathroom. Carefully remove the wire top and set in the shower or bath, with the bird inside.
Always use gentle lukewarm water, and never leave your bird alone in the shower.
It also helps to heat up the bathroom with a brief hot shower, before bringing the bird in. Or use the hot water to clean the cage bottom.
I have 23 rescue birds. Many hadn't had a bath in years. The last three that I brought home, came home in my clean carriers. They stunk so bad, that we could smell it all over the house. After I hand-bathed them in the sink, the water was brown. Wow - talk about rinse and repeat.
So, yes a dirty bird can stink. But birds only get that dirty, when their basic needs (like a bath), are neglected.
