| Question about Pets:Quaker Parrot.? |
I have three quakers, they are the best!! I never put my hand in their cages when they each first came home. I would leave the doors on their cages open, and in time they would come out to check out their surroundings. I would walk over to the cage periodically, and talk to them and give them treats, never trying to touch them. After about a week, I would start with trying to teach them to step up. You just put your finger (pointer finger) in front of their feet, and ask them to step up. Sometimes you may have to put them their a few times, before they understand what they are supposed to do. Mine have varied about two to three weeks until they were comfortable enough and learned to do this. Don't get fustrated, just be patient. Quakers are extremely smart, and learn very quickly. All three of mine are snuggle-bunnies, they love to sit on our shoulders, and none are aggressive toward me. They can be strong willed and need to be taught "NO" if they do something you don't like. None of my birds were tame when I got them. They didn't even want to come out of their cages!! Now when I come home, they all yell "step-up", so I will let them out and pick them up. My favorite quaker sites are www.quakerparrots.com and www.quakerville.com www.brooklynparrots.com is about the wild quaker flocks in new york and new jersey!!
