| Question about Pets:How do I make it Shut Up? |
One of the best ways is to award the bird for being quiet. When your bird is quiet, give it a LOT of attention, treats, and so on. When he is loud, ignore him. If this doesn't work, you may have to reinforce him that loud is bad. Start taking food and water away when he is loud. Then when he is quiet for a while, give it back, again, praise and treats when quiet.
One problem is that EVERYONE has to treat it this way. If one person does something when it is loud, the bird could learn that it gets something when it is loud. Similar to a baby. Many babies learn that they can get anything, just by crying. Temper tantrums are the high end. The child learns that the parent will give in if the child misbehaves (basically, the parent wants the child to shut up, so the parent gives the child what he wants).
Hope this helps
