Question about Pets:IRN Parrot?

Feather pulling is not USUALLY about not having a mate. It is generally caused by the parrot being upset and disturbed by something, and it plucks it's own feathers as a result.

Then after awhile, this becomes habit.. like biting your fingernails. It doesn't feel very good, but you do it anyway.

Is there anything that could be disturbing him in his home? After the age of 18 months - 2 yrs he should get his Ring in his neck if he is male. Do you see him shake or puff up, as if to defend himself? Maybe the neighbor used a chain saw?

Some suggest that it could also be diet related, so please make sure you are giving him a good diet of veggies, and beans and some fruits.

Last but not least, take him to an Avian Vet, if you are at all concerned about his health. Sometimes it can be related to his health, so it's probably best to get his blood work up to make sure it's not any underlying disease.

If all else fails, consult with a KNOWN Avian Behavioral Consultant, they may be able to address your birds unique situation more thoroughly, and hopefully get him to stop.

At the end of the day, if he NEVER stops doing this (like biting nails), does that make him any less loved by you? I doubt it :) Sure his tail is beautiful and you want to see that, but sometimes we get birds kinda have bad habits, and we learn to love THAT and all the rest of the messiness of owning and loving Parrots ;) At least that's how I feel.
