Question about Pets:Leg mites?

Scaly mites are not easy to get rid of, and it takes a very long to get rid of them if you decide to treat. If the greater portion of your flock is affect with scaly mite I would highly recommend that you depop your flock and start anew with scale free mite birds. And clean thoroughly the coop.

How to treat scaly mites. This has to be done until the legs heal up. You must put some sort of oil or salve on the legs until the scales fall off (more like the dry, diseased scales flake off).

Bag balm, vegetable/olive oil, vaseline all work about the same. And apply lots, the point of putting these oils/salves on the bird is to suffocate the mites that have burrowed under the scales. It may also help to worm your bird with some oral wormer, either a Ivomec cattle/swine or equine (we've used both of those without problems). Your local farm store should have an oral wormer. They don't make anything specially for poultry. Be careful of the dosage, you'll have to do the math to figure out the pounds/dose.

Scale mites can get back enough to cripple your bird with some of the toes falling off and a severe scale mite infection is also quite painful your bird.

You're lucky that your judges only take off a few points, here you get DQed if your bird has scaly mites.

Good luck.
