| Question about Pets:What Does It Take To Own A Large Macaw? |
I have owned a macaw and also a cockatoo. They are extremely smart and can be very loving if given the right amount of attention. However, they are like a 4 or 5 year old child and need constant attention. So if you are working more than eight hours a day or attending college, its not a good idea. They need a lot of social interaction. If not watched properly they can destroy things pretty quick. Walls, counter tops ,tables on the corners mostly. They love to chew. If they are left alone too much, they might start plucking out their own feathers. Macaws eat alot too. Food can get expensive with bigger birds. There is also constant clean up. And they usually out live their owners. Macaws have a life span about the same as humans. However, If you are sure about it. I know a lady in Sheboygan falls, Wi that breeds large birds.
