| Question about Pets:I have a coattail and it is mean as fire what do i do? |
First of all, never yell at him. This will just get him to be more mean. When he bites, completely ignore it. No matter how much it hurts, don't respond. Once he understands that biting doesn't make you go away, he will stop biting a LITTLE. This means he trusts you slightly. Then, when he bites you, gently pinch his beak and say "that's too hard" and gently pry his beak off of you. In a week or two he will realize how hard he bites, and will find other ways of telling you "no" to things. If he GENTLY bites, stop doing whatever you were doing because this is an acceptable behavior. This teaches him that he can refuse to play with you, but he has to do it in a nice way. The biggest thing to do is teach him that you are the boss and he can't hurt you. This will train him 100 times as fast as yelling and punishing. Good luck and feel free to email me with questions! (I train birds for a local shelter that were otherwise considered "untrainable" and "unadoptable" so I know all of the training tricks.)
