Question about Pets:How do you train a homing pigeon?

You're right. Adult racers (homing pigeons) will usually return to their original loft if they've been released before. Adults usually have to be kept prisoner and used as breeding stock only. However, some can be resettled. If you're new to pigeons, I wouldn't try this at all. Instead, plan to keep the adults as breeders - you can make sure that they have a fly pen or something attached to their section so they can get exercise and sun. The youngsters are the ones that are settled to your loft and flown.

It's not complicated but it's a bit too much to go into here. I suggest that you simply contact one of the pigeon supply companies listed here http://www.angelfire.com/ga3/pigeongenet... and get a few basic books and I also suggest that you might like to contact some of the national organizations and see about contacting members in a club near to you. If you're in the States, you can contact the American Racing Pigeon Union at http://www.pigeon.org or the International Federation of Homing Pigeon Fanciers at http://www.ifpigeon.com If you're in Canada, you can check with the Canadian Racing Pigeon Union at http://www.canadianracingpigeonunion.com...

If you're in Oz, try the S. A. Homing Pigeon Association http://www.sahpa.asn.au/ and they can put you into contact with other clubs in your state if you're in Queensland, etc.

Have fun -- there is NOTHING better than standing outside one day and watching the bird you raised and trained setting its wings and dropping to your loft after being released that morning from five hundred miles (804.7 km) away.
