| Question about Pets:First Parakeet? What do i doHELP |
there're so much you need to know about parakeets, where should I start??
Well, first you need to have the right sized cage (the largest you can afford), food and water bowl, a variety of perches in different sizes so your new bird get to exercise his/her feet, a whole bunch of toys (swings, mirrors, etc.), proper nutritious bird food (seeds, pellets), treats, bath, cuttlebone, millet, and on and on and on... You can check the internet for the materials you need to get.
Unless you considered breeding the parakeets, the gender really doesnt matter. Males have a slightly greater reputation for talking, but both genders can learn to be social and talk. What matters more is the age of the parakeet. The younger it is, the faster it learns new things and the easier it adapts to the new environment. Also hand raised parakeets are a lot more tame and they are less afraid of people at first. But all parakeets can become great pets if you put in the time and effort. Unless you can devote a LOT of your time with ur new parakeet, it's better to get more than one parakeet so they can keep each other company.
you will soon find out that having a parakeet can be a lot of work, if you want to give him a good life. During first few days, you want to give the parakeet a little space of his own so he can adjust to the new environment. If the parakeet seems agitated by the new surrounding, you can cover the back of the cage with a cloth so he can feel safe. Talk to him gently or put on some light music because parakeets do not like silence. At night, keep the room dark and quiet so he can get rest. It's important that you establish a good schedule with him. Check your house throughoutly to make sure that it is "parakeet-safe". (a.k.a Go on the internet and do a little research) After the parakeet feels more comfortable, slowly introduce yourself by bringing him treats and stuff. Dont get discouraged if he doesnt take it at first, it will probably take a while before he starts to trust you. Once he began trusting you, then you can start training him, like stepping on your fingers.
Just a word of caution, don't try to grab your parakeet from the top or try to stroke/pet them. Unlike cats and dogs, they do not appreciate being petted and are easily frightened.
Parakeets make really great pets in many ways, so have fun and build a good relationship with your parakeet.
