Question about Pets:My Birds Are Parakeets ?

There is a general rule that applies to most budgies. After the birds have matured (6 to 9 months), the males will have a bright to deep blue cere (the fleshy part above the beak where the nostrils are) and the females tend to have a brownish cream colored cere. Sometimes this is not true though, especially with color mutations. Parakeets in the wild are green with black "banding" patterns on the feathers. They have blue tails, yellowish bellies, and purplish cheek patches. Any other color is considered a mutation, so sometimes you cannot visually tell the gender of a keet. Mine are both 2 years old and have pinkish ceres, but I'm pretty sure they are male and female. There is only one way to tell for sure, and that is feather DNA testing. A test costs about $20 per bird at a good vet, but it really doesn't matter what gender they are unless you are planning to breed them. Either males or females make wonderful companions!
