| Question about Pets:How much birdfood will I have to buy to keep my bird feeder filled Sep - May? What can I expect to spend? |
Rather than just sunflower seeds, which can cause fatty liver disease in birds, why not look for a good quality or good name brand outdoor bird seed? It'll be a bit more expensive, but it will have more of the vitamins, minerals, fruits, and veggies that the birds need to have a well-balanced diet. What you've got right now probably will NOT last through the winter, especially if you have squirrels in your area, who are well known for raiding bird feeders for food.
If you live in an area that gets mice or moths, you might seriously want to consider going to your local bakery or a grocery shop with a bakery. Ask for some of their food-grade buckets. Many stores will give those for FREE! A food grade bucket ensures that there are no deposits on, or poisonous materials in the plastic. These buckets generally hold 3-5 gallons so you should be well set for safe food storage for the birds.
Mom to cockatiels for over 14 years and owned by a sight-challenged quaker parrot for over 2. You might also want to check out http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/hello... which is a parrot dedicated group with answers on a lot of bird species.
