| Question about Pets:My rat has some scabs on her back but we dont have any small vets in the area. How can I get her treated? |
One cause of scabs that you might not have thought of is mites. Both of my rats have had mites, and it causes little scabs all over their bodies under the fur. Look for scratching a lot, and patches of balding fur. If you think it might be mites, they need to be treated with a medicine like ivermectin. Your local vet might be able to get some for you and help you determine the right dosage.
If it's just scabs from fighting or getting scratched by something, the best thing to do is probably gently clean the area and let it heal on its own. You probably shouldn't put any medication on the wounds unless you look it up online and you're sure it's safe for them to ingest, because they clean their fur every day.
If you want more info or help, there are many good message boards and email groups online with people that would be willing to give advice and you might find someone from your area. It could come in handy if she gets more sick in the future and you need serious help. Good luck.
