Question about Pets:Why do hamsters run round in a wheel all night?

Hamsters are nocturnal animals - in their natural habitat (the Syrian desert) they only come out of their burrows at night to find food, because most of the predators are asleep. They run in the wheel all night because they have a high metabolism, and if they didn't run off all that energy, they would die even sooner than they naturally do.
