| Question about Pets:Assorted mixed food or pellets for Gerbils? Which do you think is better for them and why? |
Nutrition is vital to ensure your little one grows up healthy.
You can buy a general mixed food for gerbils which would be fine but could get a little boring for your pet. A mix of grains, seeds, pellets and dried vegetables is a good start.
You should also add 10 drops of gerbil vitamin suppliment liquid to his/her water(preferably purified water not tap because this can contain chemicals that can harm a rodents digestive system). If you are having trouble getting the gerbil to eat adding apple cider vinager to the water again only about 10 drops or half a cap full will help to stimulate appetite.
Treats should be given sparingly: gerbils love rodent chocolate drops. I gave mine 1 a day. You can get these from any good pet shop or pets at home. They also love sunflower seeds in the shell.. but only give one or two because seeds are very fatty and it is important that gerbils or any rodent for that matter do not eat to much fatty foods. Roughage is more essential to their health than fat. Also if your food mix contains nuts already you'll need to take this into acount. Fresh veg is also a great treat that doesnt need to be given to sparingly. carrots, lettuce... you can even buy gerbil grass that you can grow from seeds and cut bits off to give to them. They love it! It is important not to leave fresh food in their cage for too long though because it will start to rot.
Hours of playful fun for both of you... Gerbils love to be hand fed and it helps to gain trust ...helping to tame them.
