| Question about Pets:Will UltraCare Mite&Lice Spray For Birds Work on Guinea Pigs? |
The most common types of lice are not transmittable to humans. There is a sort that is - but this type of louse is rare so I don't think you should be worrying.
I use shampoo to get rid of lice (mine are being treated for lice at the moment) lice and mites are very common in guinea pigs. It is more than likely coming from the hay so you should consider switching to Timothy hay otherwise the lice will keep coming back.
Spray will not work because lice could be all over the body and the spray will not reach all areas. Shampoo will cover the whole body and kill all. I have tried spray before - it is useless.
Get a shampoo from the petshop that is insecticidal (kills pests). Make sure it is a guinea pig shampoo though as some dog/cat shampoos may harm guinea pigs.
You'll need to bath the guinea pig in the shampoo 3 times (one bath a week for three weeks) as the eggs of the lice will hatch (shampoo does not kill EGGS).
Do you have other guinea pigs? Chances are they will all have a lice infestation, even if they do not live with the infected guinea pig.
Good luck!
