| Question about Pets:Whats it like? |
I had pigeons as a kid, and I was always told by the "experts" who taught me that you should never hand raise a baby pigeon unless it is orphaned. They said that, unlike other birds who feed their babies insects and regurgitated food, pigeons and doves produce a special "crop milk" that is very rich. If the baby does not get this crop milk for at least the first 10 days, it will not grow and develop properly. Also, the people who taught me told me that pigeons, being a colonial bird, need the socialization of the flock. If you separated the baby from his parents and siblings, it would become very timid and shy, just the opposite of the way parrots and other birds are when they are hand-fed.
I had the occassion to hand-feed several baby pigoens that were orphaned, and they were very runty, and they did not have the friendly personalities that my other pigeons had. They seemed afraid of their own shadows. And I am quite sure I did the hand-feeding properly, as I have also very successfully hand-fed parrots and other birds.
