| Question about Pets:I think my chickens might have a cold? |
Though I can't tell your chickens sickness with this much information I can give you things to do help your birds.
Make sure that your coop is clean- Dust, amonia (which is in chicken poop), and fungi, can cause respitory problems. So if it is to dusty in your coop you may want to give it a hose down.
Make sure that your feed is good-Spoiling food can also cause problems for chickens. (Fungi) If the food isn't spoiled make sure that it is supplying everything that your birds bodies need. If not you may want to start with another feed.
If you find that your chickens do not want to eat try mixing in some mollasses.
Make sure that they have plenty of water-Water is very important. Chickens should have luckwarm fresh water at all times. If you wish you can buy vitamin mixtures that go in the water at a local grain shop to give your chickens a boost. Or you can give them 1 tablespoon of sugar per gallon of water.
Make sure that they are cool- It is possable that your chickens are overheated. Are their mouths open? Are they panting? If so they may be overheated. To help over heated birds give them luckwarm water and put them in the shade. You may wish to put a frozen waterbottle in the cage with them.
If your chickens are sick there should be other symtoms-
Fluffed up feathers
Dull Eyes
Not eating well
Runny droppings
Yellow combs and wattles
Not moving around like normal
What to do with a sick chicken
If it is only one or two you may find it nessasary to separate them from the heathy birds. Keep them at a proper temperature around 70 degrees. Not to hot not to cool. Follow feeding tips above if you wish.
Hope this helps,
Edit-Most birds with bird flu never show the signs. Though birds that do seem to have respiratory distress, ruffled feathers, and fewer eggs. But, domestic birds commonly die right after they show side effects. I personally don’t believe that you are having a problem with the bird flu. But, I live in America and don’t hear about it that often. http://www.mamashealth.com/infect/avianf... a helpful page on the bird flu.
Yes, bird flu is treatable with Tamiflu.
