| Question about Pets:Cockatiel diet? |
Man I really don't know where some of you get your 'research' from!
Either of those 2 are fine.
Continually I hear 'birds' aren't natural seed eaters in the wild. Well, BIRDS cover that many species it's not funny!! AND SOME do eat seed. Cockatiel YES absolutely. Seed & nuts DO have nutritional values in them. I have these if you'd like to read up on them. What you need to do is fine the better nutritional seed & nuts for your specific species. This is where poeple either go wrong or are led up the garden path!
A limited seed & nut intake for ALL parrots species should be upto the owner to control. Diseases such as fatty liver are not caused by being sensible with thier seed intake, they're caused by owners giving them too much seed or nut or only seed & nut. Everything in moderation, simply conrtol the intake of the foods.
Now, cockatiels: yep seed is eaten in the wild....a different type of seed but they do eat seed. The less fattier seed you will find will be better for your tiel. Nuts are even higher in fat & also have a great deal of excellent nutrition in them however, because the tiel doesn't require fats in their diets unlike the larger parrots you can do without all nuts & sunflower seed used as a rare treet (they too have a nutrtion in them other than fat).
Tiels are natural grassy leafy, seedy, sprouty eaters. You can 24 hour soak seed or sprout seed for your tiel. Either has better nutrtional value than the dried seed. Rich dark green, red, orange veggies are the best for them.
Fruit is very high in sugar therefore not ideal for a tiel. This is also a food they DO NOT eat in the wild.
