Question about Pets:How long does a chicken live for?

Most of the free range chickens I have had have lived on average 4 years. However, I had 1 ex-battery hen who lived for 10 years and had 13 chicks. She outlived all of her offspring. It really depends on the environment they are kept in, etc but I'd say 4 years is a good length considering they are at their peak (point of lay) at 18 months old.Obviously it depends on if they are for 'pets'/pleasure or for laying eggs! If they are just for laying, most will make it to 2 years before they slow down on the egg laying side and so are killed.
