| Question about Pets:Clipped wings on a lovebird? |
A lovebird can fledge from between 6 to 11 weeks. old.
At 8 weeks old & being clipped, it sounds like your lovie has not had the chance to learn to fly properly or been able to fledge. While SOME can be a bit naughty when flighted they should NEVER be clipped until they are well expreienced in flying & have fledged. This goes for all parrot species.
You can allow your lovies wings to grow back & she'll slowly learn to fly properly, this may take time so be patient.
There are some very successful lovie owners who do not clip their birds wings. You won't know how your lovie is gonna be once flighted until you get to know the bird & see how things work out.
While she's clipped do some extensive taming & training on her. Once she gets her wings back, if the training is successful she may be very well behaved flighted. If she isn't you may need to keep her clipped but this is something only you will know & you should decide on, not others.
Also remember whether clipping or not, wings always grow back. If unsuccessful the first time, clip & re train again while she's still young. Lovies are very smart birds, they take some time train but once trained they're fantastic to work with. A clip can also bring a naughty bird down a peg or 2.
