| Question about Pets:What Is It Like Living In A Multiple Bird Home? |
We set aside "Family time" each day. In addition we go in and visit with each bird daily.
One big tip is to have your birds either in the room where you spend the most time, or at least able to see you . That makes them think that they are helping and interacting with you. My birds are watching me right now, so they feel like they are helping me type ! :-)
The birds will call for attention sometimes, and we always go in and oblige. In return, they do not abuse this priveledge by screaming for attention 24/7.
Food is an ongoing program. I am constantly buying food, drying foods, cutting foods and mixing foods. I find that it is helpful to make the food up in large batches to be stored in 5 gallon airtight food buckets. I just accumulate all the ingredients for several weeks or months, and them spend a whole evening filling the buckets with seed, pellets, dried fruits and veggies, nuts, oyster crackers, coconut, oats, egg shell and whatever else we have found.
Of course our people food is shared as well. Popcorn is always brought home from the movie theater and distributed. And dinner is shared with those who like what we are having that night.
My wife and I have time for each other, although we do find that much of our together time involves our fids (Feathered kids ). Making up the food buckets is a family event. Making toys is often a shared task, as is the making of new sycamore perches every few months. Just as parents delight in doing thing for and with their children, we delight in doing things for and with our fids.
The key to a happy multibird home is believing that the birds are not your pets. The are your family !!
Good luck !
