| Question about Pets:Can my birds catch fleas from my dog? |
It is possible that fleas can transfer to your birds, but due to their preening activity, they will find, kill and possibly eat the little critters before they are able to set up camp on the bird. This is why healthy birds don't have the insect problems land dwelling animals do. The only time it becomes a problem is when the infestation has reached critical levels and they can no longer control them through preening. One problem they can have though is the effect of any poisons you may use to rid the dog and home of the problem. Don't spray anything around the room when the bird is present. If necessary, have a friend watch them while you fumigate the home, and dip the dog for fleas. You can have the dog treated at your vet's office, which might be the best treatment for him.
Both fleas and poisons can be a serious problem, both in their own way. I would suggest taking care of the problem before it gets out of control. Let someone trustworthy watch your birds, such as some vets will board them for a few days. That would give you the chance to spray the house without putting the birds at risk. Be sure to allow plenty of time for the poisons to dissipate from your home before bringing them back. This could take as much as a week, but it is better to be certain they are safe.
