| Question about Pets:Is my female button quail going to have eggs? (click for more info)? |
Them being fertile depends on the fertility of the male and his age. They could be "practicing" for the future if in fact they are not sexually mature. But the fact of the matter is Button Quail are much like mice and rabbits in that it doesn't take long for them to be sexually mature and once they are, they pretty much never stop humping.
I would give it about 10-15 days before you see the first egg. Also, she could have some on the way that may show up sooner but turn out infertile. Don't toss the whole lot if the first few are infertile though. Wait until she's done laying the whole clutch, and after about 5 days candle all of the eggs as best you can. With buttons the eggs are VERY difficult to candle because of their color, but sometimes you can atleast make out the blood vessels. If you're at all unsure because of a particularly dark or mottled egg, save it to be safe. They usually hatch in about 15-18 days.. so any eggs past the 21st day at the very latest can be tossed if they haven't hatched.
