| Question about Pets:How can I get birds into my dads bird house? |
If you dad made the modification on the birdhouse a few months ago, it would have been in time for the nesting season, so it was probably due to another factor that the birdhouse went unused.
One reason might be that the hole is still not the right size for the type of bird you are trying to attract.
Another reason might be too many predators in the area where you put the bird house - cats, dogs, hawks, etc.
Still another reason could be the location, both the height you placed it, and how close it is to other birdhouses.
Also, it is a wooden birdhouse, or metal? Metal is not attractive to birds, because of the heat retention.
Here is an excellent website about birdhouses. Scroll down to the "birdhouse basics" on the main page, and then click on the name of the species you want to attract, and see if your dad's birdhouse is the right design: http://www.holoweb.com/cannon/buildingbh...
Also, please ignore suggestions that you put food in or near the birdhouse. Birdhouses are for nesting, not feeding birds. If you put food in (or extremely near) a feeder, the only thing you will do is attract mice and other animals that will deter birds from nesting in the birdhouse. If you have placed the birdhouse too close to a bird feeder, that will prevent the birds from nesting there, as they do not want to raise their babies too close to other, possibly predatory, species.
