Question about Pets:What is the price range for......?

The bird will run between $1200-2500, depending on the area you live in. Some areas don't have as many birds available at any given time, which causes to cost to climb higher. Also there is the cage, which will run from $300-1500. The best cage is one which the paint is powder coated, or high grade stainless steel, and large enough for the adult bird to stretch his wings without touching a side, front to back, side to side. Toys are also important, and will run about $60-100 for about 3 to 4 toys, which is enough to start him off. Toys are vital since you want the bird to be happy and enough activity to keep him busy while he is alone. Then there is food, which is usually around $13-20 for almost a month's supply.
Perches are also needed, since the one you get with the cage is not enough. Depending on the size of the cage, you can usually get away with about three to four for the type of cage you are going to need, and you will want different types. There is the concrete perch, which you should have at least one to keep his nails in check. They cost about $15 for the proper size for a Cockatoo of this size. Chola wood is a type of perch made from a dried cactus branch, and they are great for the bird to be able to chew as well as perch, and they are normally about $10-15. Finally there is Manzanita wood, which is a very hard wood, and it will last much longer than any perch you buy, and they vary from $10-30, just get one with the width large enough for the birds foot to get almost all the way around without touching toes at the bottom. The larger ones will last for a very, very long time and are worth every dime.
You might want to add an additional couple of bowls for occasional treats and fresh foods. This way you have one that is pulled daily, such as the one with fresh foods, so they don't go bad in the cage. Some cleaning supplies is also good, and some vitamins for the water. These things should add up to around $25.
Lastly, you should set aside about $50-100 each month for a vet slush fund. This way you have the money to cover visits for check-ups, as well as most health problems that might occur during the life span of your bird. Remember, this bird should be with you for up to, and possibly beyond, 50 years down the road, if he stays healthy. There are ways to save money in keeping your bird, but it is not a cheap pet by any means. If you want to learn about ways to save some money, feel free to join Parrot Flock.
