| Question about Pets:How do I know which bird is a male or female? |
In most species of lovebirds (the most common ones people own- peachface, black masked, fishers) you can not tell the sex of a bird just by looking OR pelvic sexing no matter what people say. The only sure way is to have them DNA sexed, or of course if the female lays some eggs, if you have more than one bird and the eggs come up fertile, then obviously male and female....If you have siblings though they should not breed if you do have male/female. Females tend to be a little more aggressive but thats not always an indicator of sex. Color has nothing to do with it. If you want to know for sure, you can order one of the DNA kits from a few places online, then it's as easy as either plucking a few feathers, or clipping a toenail a little short to get a few drops of blood. If you don't feel comfortable you can bring them to an avian vet who can do it for you.
