| Question about Pets:Help please with snowy egrets in my backyard |
Obviously, you can not use any lethal means to get rid of them. Since they are native migratory birds, they are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. You can not harm them, or even harass them.
If you live in a northern state, they will be migrating south soon. You can just wait them out. But if you live in Florida or another of the southern states, they may be there for quite a spell. If this is a recent development, try to figure out what suddenly attracted them to the elm tree in your yard, and see what you can do to make it less attractive.
You can try hanging metal pie plates or old CDs from the branches of the trees. Use ribbon to do this. Birds can get tangled in string or fishing line, and be serevely injured. You can get a plastic owl, but egrets are pretty smart, and if the owl doesn't move, they'll catch on that it's fake.
