| Question about Pets:Large parrots and children...? |
Hi well if you are interested in a cockatoo why not a Goffins ?? They are a smaller parrot but they have the huge cockatoo attitude.. They are very sweet and gentle and would be a good choice for a family setting... The Eclectus again is a great family bird they are medium sized depending on what subspecies you get they can get rather large ( Grand & Vosamerie are the largest I beleive of this species ) A Solomon Island Eclectus gets to be about 12 inches including tail.. They are so sweet and loving and they are a family bird... I have one so I know.. They only thing you need to be aware of is thier diet.. They have a longer digestive tract than other parrots and require plenty of fresh fruits veggies leafy greens rice pasta fish chicken... Although most parrots need a similiar diet the Eclectus needs a bit more.. You might want to look into a Timneh African Grey as well.. Same talking ability as the larger Congo but a compact model :) Again I have 1 and he is so sweet loves everyone and will go to anyone gives kisses non stop... Since you are new to a larger parrot I wouldn't go out and get a Moluccan or Umbrella cockatoo.. They might prove to be too difficult for you and with beaks that size if they got upset they could do some serious damage to a small hand... I suggest a medium sized Parrot.. Please understand thier needs before you get one.. they need alot of interaction with you and your family.. Lots of playtime outside thier cage.. I don't lock mine up unless it is bedtime... They roam around the house when I am here and love to sit with my sons... I would do some homework before you purchased one make sure you have an AVIAN vet available to you and room for a large cage and lots of toys.. Especially if you decide on a Goffins they are very destructive and will make a toothpick out of a 2x4 in no time... Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to email me...
One thing I forgot to mention is you ca actually potty train your birds.. My Ekkie did this for hisself he lets me know when he has to go and to the playstand we go.. My Timneh is in the stages of potty training and the Goffins is potty trained.. It is a nice feeling knowing that they won't potty on you or your furniture...
