| Question about Pets:My cockatiel is plucking all his feathers out. He no longer has a tail! whats happening? |
Waking up first thing in the morning to this? Have a look at where the cage is situated, if he appears comfortable being in the cage, is he covered? They should be covered, new toys that may be spooking him.
If you're sleeping longer hours in the morning he may be getting very bored by the time you wake up. Perhaps a larger cage with lots of chew things, most don't like toys & chew things are better for them.
Does he have mineral, calcium blocks or cuttle bones? What's his diet? A poor diet can cause some stress on a bird which can lead to feather picking.
Is he bathed 2-3 times a week? They're very dusty birds & if their feathers are poor from lack of grooming, over preening due to itchiness etc this can also lead to feather picking.
You may want to get some natural hemp rope & make something like a tiny duster cockatiel size & try & encourage him to preen this rather than pluck.
Now since we don't know your bird & what's going on sall this is just a stab in the dark. The best thing you can do for the bird is take him to a good avian vet 7 find the cause. You cannot cure feather picking unless you pin point the exact cause. A good avian vet will know this & ask you many Q's about the birds & your lifestyle & the birds diet etc. If the vet doesn't know what to do or says nothing can be done or doesn't ask the questions you should take the bird to another avian vet as this does not happen for no reason & it isn't normal.
You especially need to get ntop of the bleeding issue as if your tiel is bleeding a lot he will die from blood loss.
