| Question about Pets:Is my chicken egg bound? |
What is she doing while sitting in the nest? Is she panting and trying to push the egg out of her? Is she standing and restlessly moving around her nesting spot? If she isn't then she is not egg bound. Being egg bound is something that is extremely uncomfortable for the hen and she is going to be exerting energy to get that egg out of her.
If she is doing the listed things you can pick her up and check. If you then find out that she is egg bound and you can not get her to the vet you can gently massage the area till it comes out. If it still will not come out you will have to take it out. To take it out you will need some latex gloves and lube. Aply the lube and reach up there and get it out. To do this you may have to break the egg. If you do make sure that you get all of the egg out of her so that she doesn't get egg bound again or have a bacterial problem. Be careful not to cut her with the egg shell.
If your hen is just sitting on the nest calmly she may be brooding. First is she a broody breed. To find out go to http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/c...
I have had extremly broody hens that sit on no eggs or just one egg. So it may be possable that she is broody. A way to check for broodyness is to lift up the hen. If she is missing most of her stomich feathers then it is very possable that she is broody.
Hope this helped.
