| Question about Pets:How long will it take for an older cockatiel to accept a younger new bird in its cage? |
I've not had this problem. Funky is getting on to be 20 years old now, and he's always been keen on a new room (cage) mate, whether male or female.
He has outlived them all, (2 died, and 1 escaped, and when a cockatiel escapes it is almost impossible to retrieve). I know he is lonely, but I don't want to get another bird in case Funky doesn't last that much longer, and then it would be a Catch 22 sitiation - getting another bird to keep the new one company etc.
My point is, cockatiels are not aggressive, and seem to welcome newcomers, no matter what age or sex they are. They are highly sociable, and like company.
So I think you should go ahead and see how it goes.
Your older bird might show signs of jealousy if he or she has been accustomed to being the sole object of your attention. In that case, you need to give it more attention than you do the new bird.
It should work out well, even in that case.
At a calculated guess, my answer to your question is -
One day for a socially deprived cockatiel.
A week or so, for a jealous one.
