Question about Pets:Have you ever noticed that sparrows hop instead of walk?

It's a shame that the number 1 poster had to post such a ridiculous response. All birds have knees - just like all humans, all dogs, all horses, all penguins, etc., have knees. This is a ludicrous explanation.
Birds hop, walk, or run depending on which is more energy efficient.
Most birds that are ground dwelling (chickens, pigeons, quail, etc) have evolved to walk or run, rather than hop, because it's more energy efficient to walk than hop constantly. Smaller birds that are usually tree dwellers, like the above poster mentioned, most often hop because this is more energy efficient for them.
Obviously there are always exceptions to the rule.
Maybe the next question will be - why do walking birds bob their heads when they walk? ;)
(Usually to stabilize their visual surroundings, if you put a pigeon on a treadmill so it's surroundings remain the same.. it doesn't bob it's head anymore)

Hand feeding? (previous)
Sun Conure? (next)
