| Question about Pets:I have a parakeet...how do I know if hes lonely or depressed? |
Have you just got your parakeet? If so, he probably is a bit lonely and unhappy at the moment because he's just been separated from his brothers and sisters. Give him time to settle in. It will take about 2 weeks - 1 month for him to do so, dependent on him. Treat him as you would like to be treated if you were taken away from your siblings and put with a strange family.
~Feed him
~Give him water every day
~Spend a lot of time talking to him on a frequent basis in a soft voice - budgies are very social creatures and unless you have 2 birds, they require a lot of attention.
~Don't grab him as this is very threatening to the bird
~Don't play any loud music or turn up the volume on the television too high, etc or your budgie will be startled and confused about the noise
~Give him a mirror to look at - a lot of people say not to do this because it takes the bond away from you and focuses on the bird in the mirror. Not true for me at all - my budgie and me have an excellent bond despite her having 2 mirrors in her cage. I think these just take away stress and boredom for the bird - so I recommend getting one if you don't have one already.
Good luck, your bird will be fine. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
