| Question about Pets:My parakeets vent is full of poop? |
Pluck the feathers around the vent. Plucking feathers is painful, but less so if you do it quick. Plucking them out or triming them is a good way to keep the droppings from sticking to it. Are the droppings green and watery? A change in diet can cause diarreah, but so can sickness. If it does in fact have diarreah, you might as well take it to the vet to get a diagnosis since this is a common symptom for many diseases.
To keep your bird healthy, try adding a teaspoon of vinegar to a quart of water and give it to them once a week. You could also try adding a tiny bit of light olive oil and garlic powder to their food once a week (olive oil to make the powder stick to the feed). Another thing that is good for them is adding a bit of crushed red pepper to their food once every week. Garlic is good for the immune system, and vinegar and red pepper sort of flush out their system to keep them clean of disease. All of these things can be found at any food store like Food Lion or Wal-Mart, instead of paying for expensive medicines online or at vets.
I do advise you taking it to the vet just in case though. They can take samples and tell you exactly what is wrong, how to treat it, and how to prevent it in the future.
Good luck!

Oh and, parakeets do not need grit, but it does help them, especially if it has crushed oyster shells in it or is PVM powdered.
