| Question about Pets:Is it fair to keep caged birds? |
Well, if you use that theory for birds, you'd have to use it for every caged animal. I have no problem with owning birds, IF, they're let out of their cage every day for interaction and exercise. I also hate those teeny tiny cages that claim to be "great for parakeets!" theyre great for stuffed birds, not real ones. When it comes to any animal cage, but bird cages especially, the bigger the cage, the better. I have birds but I make sure they get out of their cage for atleast a few hours a day to play, and fly around and get plenty of exercise. Also once a bird is tame, I dont believe in keeping their wings clipped (Unless for some reason you have to).
It is mean to own a bird, or any caged animal if you dont have the space for a big enough cage, or the time to let them out EVERY DAY. I basically let my cockatiel make his own hours. I take him out in the morning, and when he starts to get antsy, it's a sign he wants to go back. I put him back so he can eat, drink, etc, and then take him out a while later (when he starts to get noisy again, a sure sign that he wants back out). When he flies off, I dont try to stop him, I let him go. Theres no dangers and he needs his exercise, and he flies back when he wants to.
If you want a bird just to look at, but dont plan on spending much time with it, then yes its mean, unless you have a huge aviary, but if you want one as a pet, that you have plenty of time to spend with, then I think thats fine.
